In a nutshell: This paper details a summary of the findings of the eighth critical appraisal from the Primary Care Dentistry Research Forum. International studies suggest that smoking cessation in dentistry is effective, however there is not enough evidence to assess whether the interventions are cost-effective. UK studies show that Private dental practices deliver more smoking cessation interventions than NHS dentists and no studies were found evaluating the cost-effectiveness of the intervention in the UK.

In a nutshell: A team of scientists from the Unviersity of Liverpool has won a Medical Futures Award for an innovative device which is due to be launched next year. iDENTifi can identify early tooth decay and plaque before it is visible to the eye. The device comprises of a clinical digital camera which incorporates qualitative light induced fluorescence (QLF) technology to take images of the mouth using blue light and special filters which can show up cavities and plaque.
