Dental patients’ use of the Internet

In a nutshell: This article looked at determining the use of the Internet by patients attending a range of dental clinics to search for information regarding dental procedures and also their interest in online dental consultation and ‘dental tourism’.  The conclusions show that it is important for patients to receive practitioner-led direction in relation to online quality information sources and that guidance for both patients and practitioners regarding legal and ethical issues relating to dental tourism is essential.

Development of a survey instrument for benchmarking dental plan performance

In a nutshell: The aim of the research was to develop a tool to provide a national benchmark of dental care quality as described by patients.  Analysis of a  pilot survey of tested draft questions with patients identified a need to revise the survey.  Two waves of subsequent data collection tested the validity of the revised survey.  The instrument was approved by the Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (CAHPS) initiative and is now available for use.
