In a nutshell: By focusing results on the proportion of highest grades received, this instrument is capable of indicating when perceived performance falls significantly below the average.  This instrument is therefore able to inform practice development.

Development of a survey instrument for benchmarking dental plan performance

In a nutshell: The aim of the research was to develop a tool to provide a national benchmark of dental care quality as described by patients.  Analysis of a  pilot survey of tested draft questions with patients identified a need to revise the survey.  Two waves of subsequent data collection tested the validity of the revised survey.  The instrument was approved by the Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (CAHPS) initiative and is now available for use.
